"Thought breeds thought; children familiar with great thoughts take as naturally to thinking for themselves as the well-nourished body takes to growing; and we must bear in mind that growth, physical, intellectual, moral, spiritual, is the sole end of education." ~ Charlotte Mason

Book Sharing Monday: Jim Elliot: One Great Purpose

I have been lax posting in my blog this summer but as the 'official' school year starts I will be back to posting book sharing Monday, Wordless Wednesday as well as my weekly wrap up!

We just finished off a read a loud, so I thought I would post about this one! My apologies for the book picture, it was on my Kindle, so no colour! :D  This book is from the series of Christian Heroes: Then and Now.  We have read several from this series and the kids enjoy them very much.  Jim Elliot was no exception!  The kids were fascinated by all the hard work he did to get himself to the mission field.  They walked the path with him as he learned the language of the native people, helped clear airstrips and build homes and schools, ate the food of the culture, learned about the jungle and it's inhabitants and met the Quicha Indians.  They were saddened by his losses, rejoiced when he made huge strides and were fascinated with his dedication to bring the Gospel message to a tribe of violent people.   And of course, there were some tears when the five missionaries lost their lives in the hopes that the gospel would somehow make it to this tribe of lost people.  This impacted them the most because the story really did not end there.  They are aware that Nate Saint's sister (Rachel Saint) and Jim Elliot's wife (Elizabeth Elliot) both went back into the jungle to witness to this tribe.  They are also aware that people from this tribe accepted the Lord as their Savior and turned from their violent ways!

This book is fantastic as a read a loud and can be read by adults and children.  We will follow it up with Rachel and Elizabeth's stories at some point within the next year.

Summer Crochet Projects!

This summer has been bringing lots of babies with it! :)  So I have been working on special projects for the little ones and their Mommies! This first one is a baby blanket using the left over yarn I have in my bin.  It uses a combination of Double Crochet and a popcorn stitch.  I used the pattern:  Blackberry Striped Baby Blanket.  I was so pleased with the way it turned out.  It ended up being so colourful and soft!
This one my daughter made!  She made up her own pattern using a combination of the v-stitch, single crochet and a border.  It was made with 100% handcrafted cotton yarn from Bernat.  It was a lovely colour combination for a boy!
I made this one for another little baby boy (lots of boys being born).  It was a very fun pattern and I like the way it came together.  The colours were also just perfect for a boy.  This pattern came from the Bernat site.  You have to sign up to have access to the patterns but the membership is free, all you have to do is sign up.

I also worked on my shawls.  The last two in this picture are the shawls.
